Lagos State has experienced the loss of its fifth elected local government official since the current councils were inaugurated in July 2025, with the recent passing of Hon. Habib Adekunle Anifowoshe, Majority Leader of the Igbogbo-Bayeku LCDA Legislative Council.
The announcement of Anifowoshe’s death came through a condolence message from the Somolu 10th Legislative Council, which expressed deep sorrow over the loss felt by the legislative community, his constituents, colleagues, and the entire local government network in Lagos State.

Somolu Council Leader, Rt. Hon. Tunde James Oyeyiola, praised Anifowoshe as a dedicated legislator and public servant, noting that his efforts in legislative representation and community development would be fondly remembered.
This incident has highlighted the unfortunate deaths of four additional elected local government officials within months of their inauguration on July 27, 2025.
The first to pass was Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor for Ward C in Ibeju-Lekki, who died on August 13, 2025, merely 17 days following her inauguration, reportedly due to a brief illness.

Shortly after, on August 18, Zainab Shotayo, Councillor for Ward C and Chief Whip of the Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA Legislative Council, also succumbed to a brief illness just 22 days into her term.
Another loss occurred on September 20, 2025, with the death of Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, who passed away 55 days post-inauguration.
Additionally, Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor for Ward F in Shomolu, died on September 21, 2025, barely two months after taking office.
With Anifowoshe’s passing, five elected local government officials inaugurated in Lagos State in July 2025 have now died within approximately 14 months, with the first four being women.

The Somolu 10th Legislative Council extended prayers for Allah to forgive Anifowoshe’s shortcomings, grant him Al Jannah Firdaus, and provide strength to his family, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time.
His death contributes to the increasing list of elected local government officials who have passed away since the councils were inaugurated last year.
