The Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has brought residents, community leaders and key government officials together for a stakeholders’ dialogue aimed at finding solutions to the persistent electricity challenges affecting communities across the area.

The interactive meeting, hosted by the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, was held at the Council Secretariat in Igando-Oloja and featured direct engagement between residents and the Lagos State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye.

The meeting provided residents with an opportunity to raise concerns over prolonged power outages, inadequate electricity infrastructure and other challenges affecting power supply in the rapidly developing Ibeju-Lekki corridor.

The engagement comes amid wider efforts by the Lagos State Government to improve electricity infrastructure along the Lekki-Epe axis, including plans around the 132kV transmission corridor from Ajah to Ibeju-Lekki (Eleko Junction).

Residents seek answers on power outages

Unlike a conventional government meeting dominated by formal speeches, the Ibeju-Lekki forum was structured as a two-way engagement, allowing community representatives and youths to directly present their concerns to government officials.

Residents raised issues surrounding prolonged outages and infrastructure deficits, while officials responded to questions relating to the administrative and technical challenges affecting the expansion of electricity infrastructure.

The dialogue also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the practical steps required to improve power supply across communities within the local government.

One of the major issues discussed was the Right-of-Way (RoW) required for the development and expansion of electricity transmission infrastructure.

Representatives of the Ministry of Lands and Housing explained the challenges associated with property encroachment and land-clearance processes, which can affect the deployment of major infrastructure projects.

The issue is particularly significant given ongoing plans to strengthen electricity infrastructure along the Ajah–Ibeju-Lekki corridor. Earlier in 2026, Lagos State held stakeholder engagements specifically around the 132kV transmission line and related Right-of-Way requirements.

Officials stressed the importance of protecting infrastructure corridors to enable utility projects to proceed safely and efficiently.

Community representatives, however, also used the forum to seek clarification on how Right-of-Way challenges could be addressed while taking the interests of affected residents and property owners into consideration.

Olowa pushes for direct community engagement

By convening the dialogue, Olowa’s administration sought to create a direct communication channel between residents and the government agencies responsible for energy and land-related matters.

The meeting allowed community concerns to be placed directly before the Commissioner for Energy and representatives of the relevant ministries.

The council administration also emphasised the need for cooperation among government institutions, communities and other stakeholders in addressing the electricity challenges confronting Ibeju-Lekki.

The approach reflects previous engagements around electricity infrastructure in the area, including discussions involving the Lagos State Government, electricity-sector stakeholders and local authorities. In April 2026, Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and its technical partner, CGCC, also engaged the Ibeju-Lekki council leadership over plans to improve electricity supply, including an inspection of a proposed site for an embedded power station.

Government, Communities Seek Shared Solutions

The stakeholders’ dialogue ended with an understanding among the local government, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Ministry of Lands and Housing to work together towards resolving Right-of-Way bottlenecks and other obstacles to electricity infrastructure development.

The engagement also underscored the importance of keeping residents informed as major electricity projects progress within the Ibeju-Lekki axis.

For a community experiencing rapid population growth and increasing economic activity, reliable electricity remains an important infrastructure concern.

Ibeju-Lekki has witnessed significant industrial, residential and commercial development in recent years, increasing the demand for dependable electricity supply.

The Lagos State Government has previously said improved power and gas infrastructure is important to supporting industrial hubs, residential developments and commercial activities along the Lekki-Epe corridor.
