Lagos State Govt, British Council to enhance global recognition for Nigerian Music industry

The Lagos State government has reiterated its strong commitment to developing young talent in the creative and music sectors while addressing the challenges hindering global recognition for Nigerian musicians.

During a visit from Mr. Kesiena Harry, Head of Arts and Culture at the British Council, Nigeria, on Thursday at her office in Alausa, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, emphasized that Nigerian music is gaining international attention, yet many seasoned artists receive little or no royalties. She stressed the importance of adopting international standards for royalty collection to ensure fairness and transparency within the industry.

Benson-Awoyinka also raised concerns about dwindling streaming revenues and the need for key stakeholders to implement strategic initiatives that highlight African music and support emerging talents. She reiterated the investments made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to enhance the promotion of creatives in the music industry, both locally and globally.

Mr. Kesiena Harry from the British Council expressed the organization’s readiness to collaborate with Lagos State through structured partnerships, study tours, and international exchange programs. He introduced an upcoming initiative, Music Connects Africa, scheduled for launch in 2026, aimed at fostering cultural exchange, artist residencies, and specialized training for musicians.

Additionally, he shared news about the British Council’s Creative Economy Programme in Nigeria, which aims to connect Nigerian creatives with a global audience and enhance their recognition.
