The Lagos State Government has emphasized that the ongoing demolitions in the Ikota area are not aimed at any particular ethnic group, but rather a measure to protect Lekki from flooding.
As stated by the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, the buildings being demolished were built on the Ikota River’s right-of-way, obstructing natural water flows and contributing to increased flash flooding along the Lekki–Ajah corridor.

Officials clarified that prior notices were issued in 2025 before the demolition started, reiterating that only illegal constructions that block waterways are being removed.
“This is about protecting lives and restoring waterways. Water knows no tribe or race. Our goal is to reduce flooding, not victimise anyone,” the government stated.
