The statement, co-signed by Wuraola Alake of NIWA and Omowunmi Yussuff of LASWA, detailed the coordinated rescue effort involving both agencies, the Marine Police, and other first responders.
“Four passengers were rescued alive and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement read.
“Unfortunately, six other passengers were recovered dead at the scene. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing to account for all individuals involved.”
While investigations are still in the early stages, preliminary reports suggest the boat may have struck a submerged object. Authorities are working to determine the precise cause of the accident.
Both LASWA and NIWA extended their condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated their commitment to waterway safety.
The agencies also issued a reminder to all waterway users to strictly follow safety protocols, including proper navigation and adherence to the “no night travel” rule.
As the investigation continues, the public has been urged to remain calm and seek information only from official sources such as LASWA and NIWA.
