Akran’s death: Sanwo-Olu cautions Badagry chiefs against power struggles in succession

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has issued a stern warning to the Badagry royal council, urging traditional chiefs to prevent any manipulation of the succession process following the death of the Akran of Badagry, Oba Aholu Menu Toyi I.

The respected monarch passed away on January 12 due to a brief illness at his palace, leaving a profound sense of grief in the historical town.

During a condolence visit to the Akran’s family and the royal council, Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Bolaji Robert, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, emphasized the importance of fairness, unity, and transparency in selecting the next Akran.

He warned against allowing personal interests or divisions to affect the succession process, stressing the need to preserve Badagry’s rich history and peace. The governor called on the chiefs and community members to unite and protect the integrity of the town, highlighting the necessity to avoid turmoil during this delicate period. He assured the community of the state government’s assistance throughout the transition.

Acknowledging the significant loss the community has experienced, the governor reminded them that life continues and peace must be upheld.

Babatunde Hunpe, Chairman of Badagry Local Government, mirrored the governor’s sentiment, urging all parties to adhere strictly to the state government’s guidance. He pledged the council’s dedication to maintaining peace and order during the succession process.

On behalf of the royal family, Adesola Akran-Oketunde, the eldest daughter of the late monarch, thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team for their visit, requesting ongoing support for the family and efforts to keep Badagry and Lagos State peaceful.

As Badagry grieves its late king, attention turns to the royal council, with strong calls for a transparent and harmonious process in selecting the next custodian of the ancient throne.
