Bovi blames ‘Social Media distraction’ after Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 Semi-Final exit

Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has taken to social media to sharply criticise the Super Eagles following their dramatic AFCON 2025 semi-final defeat to Morocco, suggesting that distraction from social media and public praise played a part in the team’s loss.

Reacting to Nigeria’s 4–2 penalty shootout defeat in Rabat, Bovi argued in a video shared on his Instagram page that Super Eagles players have been overly influenced by social media attention and accolades from fans, which he believes has affected their focus and competitive edge.

“Social media has distracted you all, and the praise got to your heads,” he said, warning that such distractions have undermined their mentality in crucial moments.

Bovi reminded the players that many top international teams deliberately limit social media exposure during major tournaments to maintain concentration, offering Argentina’s preparation for their 2018 clash with Nigeria as an example.

He also delivered a broader message on national pride and commitment, saying that representing Nigeria carries deep emotional weight and responsibility: “Football is the only thing that unites Nigeria… if you choose to play for Nigeria, understand that you have the potential to unite Nigerians.”

Bovi didn’t shy away from addressing individual performances, notably referencing Samuel Chukwueze’s missed penalty, but he framed his critique as a call for greater seriousness rather than personal blame.

“If you’re not ready to give everything for the nation, don’t come to the Super Eagles.”

The comments have sparked lively debate among fans and pundits, with some agreeing that modern distractions can affect players’ mental preparation, while others argue that focus should remain on tactical and technical performance rather than social media chatter.

Nigeria will now prepare for the third-place playoff, where they will aim to end their AFCON campaign on a high note.
