Heartbreak for Super Eagles as Morocco Clinches AFCON Final Spot in Penalty Shootout

Nigeria’s dreams of reaching the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final were dashed in a dramatic penalty shootout, as they fell 4-2 to host nation Morocco following a tense and goalless semi-final clash.

After 120 minutes of cagey football failed to produce a winner, the match was decided from the spot. Misses from Bruno Onyemaechi and Samuel Chukwueze proved fatal for the Super Eagles, allowing Youssef En-Nesyri to convert the winning penalty and send the Atlas Lions into the final against Senegal.

The encounter, a highly anticipated clash between two of Africa’s football powerhouses, was a tactical battle with few clear opportunities. Both teams displayed defensive solidity but lacked the cutting edge in the final third throughout a cautious 90 minutes and extra time.

Morocco’s Brahim Díaz had an early chance but sent his shot wide, while Ademola Lookman tested the Moroccan goalkeeper at the other end. The hosts continued to probe, with Adam Masina and Díaz again threatening before an Achraf Hakimi free-kick sailed just over the bar.

Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, was called into action to parry a powerful strike from Ismael Saibari, keeping the score level at halftime.

The second half mirrored the first, with both sides cancelling each other out. Raphael Onyedika for Nigeria and Abde Ezzalzouli for Morocco had half-chances, but as the game wore on, a fear of making a costly mistake stifled creativity. Ezzalzouli managed a late effort, but it was easily handled by Nwabali, sending the tie into extra time.

The additional 30 minutes saw Morocco look the more likely to score. Nayef Aguerd struck the post, and Nwabali was forced into several more saves to keep Nigeria in the contest. The Super Eagles, in contrast, struggled to create any meaningful attacks, registering only two shots during the extra period.

With the deadlock unbroken, the semi-final proceeded to a penalty shootout. After both teams missed one of their initial kicks, Morocco held their nerve. En-Nesyri stepped up to score the decisive penalty, securing a historic first-ever AFCON shootout victory for the Atlas Lions and ending Nigeria’s campaign in heartbreaking fashion.
