The announcement was made by Mr. Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, the Lagos State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, during a press interaction in Lagos.

He stated that the government has received approval to build the jetty and develop housing as part of a larger urban renewal initiative.

In the last months of 2025, the Oworonshoki community in Kosofe Local Government experienced significant demolitions aimed at urban revitalization.

This initiative reportedly displaced thousands, including elderly residents who had invested their savings in their homes.

There are claims that the demolitions occurred without prior notice, compensation, and in defiance of a legal order meant to stop such actions.

Bush-Alebiosu, who is from the Kosofe area, expressed his sympathy for the affected residents, stating that the situation is particularly poignant for him.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s my local government; my roots run deep here, and I understand the community’s pain,” he remarked.

While he has attempted to support some victims, the commissioner emphasized that sustainable solutions depend on infrastructure development rather than temporary poverty relief measures. “Poverty alleviation often has limits; investing in projects with substantial economic benefits, like infrastructure, is more effective,” he explained.

He further pointed out the economic opportunities the jetty would create for several local governments in his federal constituency.

“The waterway runs through three local governments in my area, and we have secured approval for a jetty estimated to cost N7 billion. Discussions with the governor are ongoing to ensure sound decisions,” he added.

Additionally, Bush-Alebiosu mentioned that approvals have been granted for housing developments in Oworonshoki, highlighting its strategic location.

“Oworonshoki is ideally situated for development, and we see no reason not to channel some of the island’s growth toward it,” he stated.

Despite these reassurances, many displaced residents are still seeking accountability, compensation, and assurances regarding whether the new developments will provide for those whose homes were destroyed.
