Alleged drug trafficking: Nigerians are entitled to know about Tinubu’s past, Peter Obi says

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s attempts to keep records about his past from a foreign court, insisting that Nigerians are entitled to transparent answers on issues that affect the public.

In a statement shared on his official social media on August 31, 2026, Obi voiced his worries regarding the legal actions and unanswered questions about the President’s background and educational history.

He contended that a sitting leader should openly address inquiries about their past instead of trying to hide relevant information from public examination.

“It is quite embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is requesting a foreign court to keep records about his past private, especially those that are of legitimate public interest,” Obi asserted.

He also questioned why there remains confusion surrounding basic educational credentials, such as primary and secondary school records, which have been tied up in legal disputes for an extended period.

Obi stressed that the public is entitled to “clear, credible, and verifiable explanations,” particularly when such credentials have been previously presented to public authorities.

“Everyone has an imperfect past, which is part of being human. What matters is the ability to address it with humility, honesty, and a sincere apology, making amends where needed, and prioritizing the nation’s interests above personal ambitions when necessary,” he remarked.
