Amid xenophobic violence, SA President calls on African nations to work together on migration and protect human right

In the face of xenophobic violence, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa urged African countries to collaborate on migration issues and uphold human rights.

He made this statement while speaking to the Pan-African Parliament on July 28, in response to weeks of protests from groups blaming undocumented migrants for rising unemployment, crime, and increased strain on public services.

South Africa has been under scrutiny from other African nations due to attacks on their citizens, with reports of at least four migrants killed, including a Nigerian who died while in custody in Cape Town.

Ramaphosa described these incidents as โ€œsad and abhorrent,โ€ expressing regret for the lost lives and reaffirming the countryโ€™s stance against xenophobia or Afrophobia.

As a result, thousands of African migrants have left South Africa in recent weeks, with countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Malawi facilitating the voluntary return of their nationals.
