On Monday, the Badagry community experienced a surge of hope and relief as Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, kicked off the Asiwaju Food Palliative Programme at the council secretariat in Ajara. This initiative is part of his administration’s activities celebrating the first 100 days in office and seeks to alleviate the ongoing economic struggles facing families in the area.
While speaking to community leaders, stakeholders, and local residents, Hunpe emphasized that the government must always prioritize its essential responsibility: the safety and well-being of its citizens. He acknowledged that numerous households across the country are finding it difficult to navigate the current economic challenges and stressed that local governments need to step up and offer significant support.

Hunpe detailed that the initial phase of this program is set to assist at least 2,000 families, with a focus on those most in need.
During the event, Hunpe took the opportunity to showcase significant accomplishments from his initial 100 days in office, such as road construction, school renovations, enhanced revenue collection, initiatives to boost tourism, and increased engagement with the community. He pointed out that while developing infrastructure is crucial, the well-being of people must remain a top priority.
“A constructed road is important, but so is a filled stomach,” he remarked, emphasizing that the food assistance program aligns with the council’s overall focus on development centered around the needs of the people.
The chairman expressed his appreciation to everyone involved in gathering, verifying, and managing logistics, including his wife, the Chief of Staff, councillors, political leaders, Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Committees (CDCs), the NULGE Badagry chapter, and market leaders. He acknowledged their hard work in ensuring the program truly serves the grassroots.
Hunpe reassured residents that the food assistance is just the first step, pledging more initiatives and extended support in the future.
