The Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has halted the ongoing “Eze Ndi-Igbo Palace Project,” describing it as unauthorised and inconsistent with the laws governing Lagos State.
According to a statement signed by Mesewaku M. Stephen, Esq., Head of Legal Services Unit, the suspension followed reports of a letter circulated under the name Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo Traditional Ruling Council, Badagry West LCDA, soliciting public funds for the construction of a “New Palace” and promoting the title Eze Ndi-Igbo of Badagry West LCDA.

The council clarified that the title Eze Ndi-Igbo has no legal or traditional recognition under the Obas and Chiefs Law of Lagos State, and therefore carries no official status within the state’s traditional hierarchy.

“While the Council recognises and appreciates the positive influence of the Igbo community in Badagry West LCDA, it will not allow any act or title that is alien to the laws of Lagos State to take root,” the statement read. “Anything not known to law remains an illegality,” it added.
Chairman Reaffirms Respect for Law and Order
The Executive Chairman of the council, Mr. Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren (RIKAY), emphasized that Badagry West remains one of the most peaceful and ethnically inclusive councils in Lagos State, a harmony sustained by respect for the rule of law and constituted authority.

“We do not oppose having a community leader among the Igbos to coordinate their social and administrative affairs,” Yemaren stated. “But such leadership must not be styled in a way that contradicts the chieftaincy laws or undermines the authority of recognised royal fathers — the Alapa of Apa Kingdom and the Akweno of Kweme Kingdom.”
All Activities Ordered to Cease Immediately
The council announced that all activities related to the unauthorized palace project and the purported Eze Ndi-Igbo title have been ordered to stop with immediate effect.
The directive has been formally communicated to the Alapa of Apa Kingdom, the Akweno of Kweme Kingdom, the Area Commander, Nigeria Police, Area ‘K’ Command, and the Divisional Police Officer, Seme Division.
Members of the public were also advised to disregard any fundraising appeals or correspondence linked to the Eze Ndi-Igbo Palace Project in Badagry West LCDA.
