Christians shouldn’t be subjected to Sharia law, Sultan of Sokoto says

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has asserted that it is inappropriate for Christians to be subjected to Sharia law or courts, emphasizing that Sharia is intended solely for Muslims.

Speaking at the 2025 triennial meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council in Abuja, which focused on fostering peace, he insisted that Christians should not be forced to adopt Muslim practices in terms of dress or prayer.

He reaffirmed that Nigeria is a diverse religious nation, with a government that supports both major faiths impartially.

During the event, House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen called for greater collaboration between NIREC and the Federal Government to enhance peacebuilding efforts and address security issues.

He warned that extremists are manipulating religion to sow division and commended NIREC for its efforts in promoting unity.

Tajudeen emphasized that this meeting reflects a national commitment to peaceful coexistence and pledged legislative support, encouraging Nigerians to challenge stereotypes and reject divisive narratives.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, addressed concerns regarding internal security issues, political unrest, and declining public trust.

He affirmed the government’s dedication to the welfare and safety of citizens and urged religious and traditional leaders to promote unity.

CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh advocated for stronger partnerships between faith groups and the government, highlighting their ability to mobilize communities for peace.

NIREC Executive Secretary Rev. Fr. Cornelius Omonokhua stated that every life is valued by God and called on leaders to unite in combating terrorism and banditry.

He prayed for wisdom for the authorities and for a national renewal that fosters positive values and enhances harmony.
