Dangote fuel sells cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria – Falana laments

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has raised concerns over the rising cost of fuel in Nigeria, lamenting that petrol from the Dangote Refinery sells for a cheaper price in neighbouring Togo than within the country.

Falana made the remarks on Sunday during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television, while reacting to the federal government’s proposed 5 per cent fuel surcharge.

The senior advocate warned that the surcharge would worsen the economic strain already faced by millions of Nigerians.

“I guess the government wants to go back to the drawing board and ensure that it is not accused of multiple taxes or double taxation because consumers will pay VAT for buying fuel. They will now put an additional 5 per cent tax,” Falana said.

Citing reports, Falana noted that Dangote fuel is currently ₦65 cheaper in Togo compared to prices in Nigeria.

“From what we just read today, the Dangote fuel taken from Nigeria is now cheaper in Togo than in Nigeria — I think about 65 naira. So, the government will have to review these developments and ensure more hardship is not imposed on Nigerians,” he added.

Falana urged authorities to reconsider the proposed levy, stressing that the government must prioritise policies that ease economic pressure rather than deepen it.
