Bridges in Focus: Carter Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge

Carter Bridge

  • Originally constructed in 1901 and reconstructed in the 1970s, Carter Bridge connects Lagos Island to the mainland.
  • Structural fatigue, corrosion, and weakened steel components now make replacement the only viable long-term solution.
  • Remedial works are ongoing to maintain its integrity in the short term.

Third Mainland Bridge

  • Opened in 1990, the 11.8-kilometre bridge is Africa’s second-longest and a vital transport artery.
  • Despite repairs since 2012, underwater structural elements show signs of deterioration.
  • Planned works include comprehensive rehabilitation of underwater supports to ensure sustainability for the next 50 years.

Minister Umahi Highlights Transparent Procurement Process

Minister Umahi emphasized that both bridge projects are undergoing transparent procurement procedures, and Deutsche Bank will be updated once successful bidders are selected.

“There would be a comprehensive repair of the underwater elements [of Third Mainland Bridge] to retain its sustainability for another 50 years,” he stated.

The bank lauded the government’s commitment to upgrading transport infrastructure and highlighted Hitech Construction Ltd’s work on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as evidence of Nigeria’s capacity to deliver major projects.

“They commended the President for his commitment to the development of large-scale and quality road infrastructure across the nation, critical for sustainable economic growth and national prosperity,” said Minister Umahi’s media adviser, Orji Uchenna.
