ECOWAS breaks silence over attempted military takeover in Benin

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has voiced serious concern following reports of an attempted military takeover in Benin, labeling the incident a “grave and unacceptable assault on the democratic will of the people.”

In a statement released from Abuja on Sunday, the regional bloc strongly condemned the unconstitutional move and demanded complete adherence to the nation’s constitution.

The ECOWAS Commission also praised the swift actions of the Beninese government and the Republican Army for successfully managing the situation and restoring order.

The organization issued a stern warning, stating that the orchestrators of the plot will be held “individually and collectively” accountable for any resulting loss of life or damage to property.

Furthermore, ECOWAS affirmed its unwavering support for the government and citizens of Benin. It declared its readiness to provide all necessary assistance to uphold the constitution and protect the country’s territorial integrity, including the possible deployment of the regional standby force.
