Heatwaves: Doctors urge Lagos govt. to provide free drinking water

Medical practitioners in Lagos have called on the state government to roll out targeted emergency measures, including free public drinking water kiosks and hydration stations, to cushion vulnerable citizens against punishing heatwaves.

Dr. Oluwole Olusanya, Chairman of the Medical Guild, made the appeal during a press briefing commemorating the association’s centenary anniversary. He pointed out that forward-thinking administrations worldwide deploy similar hydration initiatives to curb heat-induced illnesses and fatalities.

Lagos faces heightened public health risks during extreme weather spells due to its dense population, persistent humidity, grid reliability issues, and heavy vehicular gridlock. These combined factors significantly elevate the danger of heat exhaustion and related medical complications.

Olusanya advised the public to take precautionary steps, such as staying well-hydrated, wearing light and breathable fabrics, seeking shade, and maximizing natural ventilation at home whenever power outages occur. He also emphasized the importance of balanced nutrition—particularly fruit and vegetable intake—and sufficient rest.

Global health authorities have raised alarms over the severe climate patterns driven by El Niño, an oceanic warming trend in the tropical Pacific. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that extreme heat linked to the phenomenon could claim up to 31,400 lives in Nigeria over a six-month span.

Beyond straining agriculture and inflating food costs, elevated temperatures aggravate chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, asthma, and diabetes.

Epidemic Vigilance and Health Infrastructure

Addressing wider public health concerns, Olusanya highlighted the necessity for continued vigilance against infectious diseases amid recent regional outbreak reports. While commending Lagos for its proven track record during the 2014 Ebola crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, he cautioned against resting on past achievements.

He urged state authorities to maintain steady funding for personal protective equipment, emergency diagnostic tools, continuous staff training, and active disease surveillance networks to prevent potential outbreaks from escalating.

Tackling Brain Drain and Modernizing Care

The Guild chairman also underscored the urgency of improving working conditions for medical personnel to stem the ongoing exodus of healthcare professionals abroad. Alongside competitive remuneration, he advocated for housing schemes, vehicle financing, tax relief, and specialized cost-of-living adjustments tailored to Lagos.

Looking toward modernizing clinical practice, Olusanya championed the integration of artificial intelligence and digital healthcare platforms. He noted that implementing automated bed-space management systems and AI-driven administrative tools would accelerate emergency response times and streamline patient admissions across state medical facilities.
