The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, issued a “shoot-on-sight” directive against individuals possessing illegal firearms.
On July 24, it was reported that during a stakeholders meeting in Benue, the police chief instructed officers to shoot anyone found with illegal weapons.

However, a clarification released on Saturday stated that the IGP was actually referencing Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational guidelines for police firearm use.

In the clarification titled “Clarification: What the Inspector-General of Police Actually Said in Makurdi,” which included a video of Disu’s statements from the meeting, the police force emphasized that Disu did not give any such order.
