The Nigeria Police Force has refuted claims that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, issued a “shoot-on-sight” directive against individuals possessing illegal firearms.
On July 24, it was reported that during a stakeholders meeting in Benue, the police chief instructed officers to shoot anyone found with illegal weapons.
However, a clarification released on Saturday stated that the IGP was actually referencing Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational guidelines for police firearm use.

In the clarification titled “Clarification: What the Inspector-General of Police Actually Said in Makurdi,” which included a video of Disu’s statements from the meeting, the police force emphasized that Disu did not give any such order.
Instead, he informed officers about Force Order 237 and the proper circumstances under which they may use their weapons, adhering to established Rules of Engagement.
He also reiterated that possession of illegal arms and related killings will not be tolerated, and the public is encouraged to view the video for complete context.
