LASTMA impounds 84 vehicles in Lagos one-way, illegal garage crackdown

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation targeting traffic violations and illegal garages across Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu.

The operation focused on curbing one-way driving, dangerous reversing, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading and the use of under-bridge spaces and road setbacks as unauthorised garages.

LASTMA expressed particular concern over commercial buses reversing against traffic from Iddo towards Idumota through Carter Bridge, describing the practice as dangerous to motorists, commuters and pedestrians.

The enforcement exercise was met with resistance in some locations, with some LASTMA officers reportedly assaulted and injured. The Agency also said some individuals who attacked personnel and damaged its operational vehicles were apprehended.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the sustained enforcement was necessary to restore order and improve safety on critical traffic corridors.

He warned motorists, commercial bus operators, transport unions and other road users against violating traffic regulations, stressing that public roads, bridges and under-bridge spaces must not be used for illegal parking, loading, repairs or garage operations.

LASTMA urged members of the public to report dangerous driving, traffic obstructions and other violations through its toll-free short code, 3367.
