Seun Kuti, an Afrobeat musician, stated that his father, iconic Afrobeat figure Fela Kuti, might still be alive if he had enforced stricter rules regarding his wives’ relationships.
During an Instagram livestream, Seun addressed a woman’s criticisms, who argued that Fela did not deserve his accolades because he allegedly transmitted HIV to his partners and ultimately died from AIDS.

In his response, Seun contended that Fela wasn’t entirely to blame for the disease’s spread, suggesting that one of his wives may have contracted HIV from another source before passing it on.
“Fela made many mistakes. I once saw a video of a woman questioning why people celebrate Fela despite his alleged role in giving women HIV and his subsequent death from AIDS,” Seun remarked.

He continued, saying that if Fela had adhered to more traditional values, he might still be alive. He mentioned that all of Fela’s wives had other partners.
Seun explained that his father’s philosophy allowed his wives the freedom to see other men, just as he did, as long as they didn’t bring them home. “Fela didn’t confine his women to himself; he believed if he could sleep with multiple partners, then they should also be free to meet others, as long as it didn’t happen in his house. He preferred to stay home with his women, who would go out and bring men back.”
He further noted, “My father didn’t seek other women outside; it was his wives who inadvertently brought HIV home to him. No one is perfect; everyone makes mistakes. But Fela was a man grounded in humanity.”
