The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially confirmed that a plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government has been uncovered, stating that the personnel involved will face a military judicial panel.

Suspicions of a coup attempt first emerged in October 2025 after the federal government abruptly cancelled the parade for the nation’s 65th independence anniversary. While reports quickly linked the cancellation to a potential coup, the DHQ initially dismissed these claims as unfounded.
At the time, military authorities insisted the parade’s cancellation was unrelated to any alleged plot. They also stated that the arrest of several officers, which coincided with the reports, was a separate matter. However, by the end of October, it was reported that at least 16 military officers had been detained in connection with the alleged coup attempt, with two others reportedly evading arrest.
Investigation Concludes, Trials to Begin
In a statement released on Monday, Director of Defence Information Samaila Uba announced that a thorough investigation has concluded and implicated several personnel in the plot. He confirmed that those found with a case to answer will be formally arraigned.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the general public that investigations into the matter have been concluded and the report forwarded to the appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations,” the statement read.
Uba explained that the comprehensive investigation, conducted according to military procedure, identified officers whose actions were “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the AFN.”
He added, “Accordingly, those with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before an appropriate military judicial panel to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations. This ensures accountability while upholding the principles of fairness and due process.”
The defence spokesperson described the proceedings as “purely disciplinary” and part of the military’s internal mechanisms to maintain order and discipline. He reaffirmed the armed forces’ commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority.
