NYSC DG urges parents to provide adequate transport fare for corps members travelling to orientation camps

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children have sufficient transport fare when traveling to orientation camps across Nigeria, warning that inadequate funds could put them in dangerous situations.

In a forum hosted by the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Nafiu stated, β€œIt’s advisable for parents and guardians to give their children extra transport money to safely break their journeys rather than risk their safety.”

He noted that some corps members run out of fare on extended trips and may choose not to stop, even when travel conditions become precarious. This decision can lead to risks such as kidnapping and other dangers associated with night travel. He emphasized that these choices create security vulnerabilities, including threats from traveling after dark.

Nafiu also recommended that corps members start their preparations as soon as they receive their call-up numbers to avoid last-minute travel, which could jeopardize their safety.

He warned: β€œWe advise them not to travel past 6 PM. If it gets late, they should halt their journey and continue the next day.”

He mentioned that the NYSC has enhanced its partnership with security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the military, to provide escorts, patrols, and intelligence support to ensure safer travel routes to orientation camps.

Additionally, he warned against scammers who claim they can influence postings, reiterating that deployments are generated by a systematic process. He added that special postings closer to families or health facilities are only considered for legally married women or corps members with verified medical issues.
