This clarification followed an engagement between the School’s Public Relations Officer (P.R.O) and the Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University (ACJOAU), amid growing interest within the campus community.

University’s Official Position

Speaking with ACJOAU, the University Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju stated that the institution is handling the matter internally in accordance with established disciplinary procedures.

‘The University is still on the matter. Once the University is through with its investigation, we will communicate with the public,’ he said.

Background of the Incident

The controversy began after a rape allegation widely circulated on social media. The claim, which attracted national attention, was later described by several online commentators as fabricated. Amid the heated online discourse, a student identified as David (a 200-level student) reportedly reposted a viral advocacy post condemning sexual violence.

Subsequently, another student from the Department of English allegedly reacted to a separate post linked to the unfolding narrative. The situation escalated when David’s contact details were reportedly circulated in various online groups alongside accusations portraying him as a rapist.

Sources suggest that the publication of his contact details led to an influx of hostile messages, threats, and harassment directed at him via social media and private messaging platforms.

Petition and University Intervention

In response to the alleged harassment and defamatory publication, the affected student reportedly gathered evidence, including screenshots of conversations and posts, and submitted a formal petition to the University Senate.

The matter was reportedly taken up by the relevant disciplinary panel. The student accused of making the defamatory publication was invited for questioning. Sources familiar with the proceedings indicated that the panel requested supporting evidence for the rape allegation.

It was further reported that an apology video was later issued by the accused student. However, the University panel has reportedly requested the presence of her parents as part of the ongoing inquiry. Departmental executives have also been notified of the development.

Legal Dimension

The issue has since taken a legal turn, as a law firm, K.C. Anekwe & Associates, Barristers & Solicitors, issued a formal demand letter on behalf of the male student.

The letter alleges defamation, injurious falsehood, cyber harassment, and misuse of personal data. It demands:

  • Payment of ₦15,000,000 as damages;
    A written apology and full retraction to be published across all platforms where the allegation was made;
    Immediate removal of all defamatory content;
    A written undertaking to cease further defamatory statements.
  • The letter also sets a fourteen-day deadline for compliance, failing which legal proceedings may be initiated.

Campus Reactions

The development has sparked widespread discussion among students concerning responsible digital conduct, the consequences of public allegations without sufficient evidence, and the importance of institutional procedures in resolving disputes.

As the disciplinary panel continues its work, members of the University community await an official release detailing the findings and any measures that may follow.
