On Wednesday, there was widespread anger as the Lagos State Government began demolishing parts of Makoko, a notable waterfront community in Lagos, resulting in thousands of residents losing their homes and livelihoods.
The demolition caused chaos in Makoko, where fishermen, traders, and artisans reside, forcing many to flee with their personal possessions. Families, including women and children, were seen stranded, uncertain about where to find shelter.

“Our fear is that this is just the beginning. We were indicated that all of Makoko is at risk. Where do they expect us to go?” a distressed resident said.
Tensions heightened during the demolition when police reportedly used teargas to disperse protesting residents. The teargas affected numerous people, leading to panic and prompting some to flee for safety.
Community leaders and human rights advocates have condemned the demolition, urging the Lagos State Government to clarify the situation, stop further demolitions, and establish humane resettlement plans for those affected.
