Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has characterized his decision to select Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as his vice presidential candidate in the 1999 election as the most significant error of his life.
During a fireside discussion with musician and activist Charly Boy in Lagos on Friday, coinciding with the launch of his foundation and his memoir titled “999: A Memoir in Tribute to Late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa,” Obasanjo reflected, stating he would not have made the same choice with hindsight.

He remarked, “The greatest mistake I made was choosing Atiku Abubakar as my vice president in 1999.” Despite the challenges posed by Atiku’s actions during his tenure, Obasanjo expressed gratitude that they did not hinder his administration’s objectives.
“I hold no bitterness about what transpired,” he noted, emphasizing his accomplishments while in office.

Obasanjo also addressed persistent questions about his lineage, reaffirming that both of his parents were from Abeokuta in Ogun State and mentioned, “I still remember our family house there.”
