Police halt egungun festival, detain organisers in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has announced the immediate cancellation of the Egungun festival that was set to take place on November 27 and 28 in the Oregun area.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, revealed that multiple individuals had been arrested for distributing posters and social media content that discouraged residents from moving freely during the festival. These individuals, identifying themselves as “Oje Parapo of Oregun,” were reportedly responsible for handing out flyers that restricted the public’s freedom of movement and expression.

Adebisi indicated that this distribution posed a threat to public safety and order, which necessitated a rapid police response.

Consequently, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has mandated the complete suspension of the festival. He cautioned that the police will not permit any activities that could disrupt public peace, compromise safety, or violate laws in the state.

The Command emphasized that no cultural events or gatherings that could escalate tensions or endanger lives will be permitted to occur.
