Recent Militia attack leaves several dead, communities abandoned in Taraba

Reports indicate that numerous individuals have lost their lives in fresh assaults by suspected armed militias targeting communities within the Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The violence erupted in Didango village when gunmen ambushed youths returning from watching an English Premier League match, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The attacks subsequently spread to Gaita, Loba, and Lewatha villages, prompting residents to seek refuge in nearby forests.

Dauda Bulus, a resident of Mayo-Gauro, claimed that the assaults were orchestrated by armed groups from a neighboring area, highlighting that the affected communities have endured years of deadly attacks, displacement, and destruction of property.

Another local stated that farmers heading home from their fields were also targeted in ambushes, leaving many injured, while additional communities faced subsequent attacks.

According to sources, an attempted assault on Gurum village near Kodai on Tuesday night was successfully thwarted by local vigilantes and community members.

Expressing concern, Abubakar Adamu warned that the recurring violence threatens peace in the area despite several peace meetings and dialogue efforts.

“The attacks often occur during the farming and harvest seasons, disrupting agricultural activities, which remain the major source of livelihood for many people in the area,” he said.

Security authorities had yet to issue an official statement, while the exact casualty figure remained unclear as of press time.
