They broke the deadlock in the 12th minute through T. Mathew, before P. Shalulile doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute to give Sundowns a comfortable lead at halftime.

Olalupo pulled one back for the home side just two minutes later. However, T. Ntsabeleng sealed the emphatic win for Sundowns with a fifth goal in the 85th minute.
With this result, Remo Stars face a mountain to climb in the return leg. They must beat Mamelodi Sundowns by at least five clear goals away from home to stand any chance of progressing. Failure to do so would mark their third consecutive exit from continental competition at the preliminary stage.
