The visitors dominated the game from the blast of the whistle to the final whistle, controlling possession and creating chances at will. They broke the deadlock in the 12th minute through T. Mathew, before P. Shalulile doubled the advantage in the 42nd minute to give Sundowns a comfortable lead at halftime.

The onslaught continued in the second half as R. Reisinho made it 3–0 in the 61st minute. A. Sales added a fourth in the 75th minute, before S. Olalupo pulled one back for the home side just two minutes later. However, T. Ntsabeleng sealed the emphatic win for Sundowns with a fifth goal in the 85th minute.

With this result, Remo Stars face a mountain to climb in the return leg. They must beat Mamelodi Sundowns by at least five clear goals away from home to stand any chance of progressing. Failure to do so would mark their third consecutive exit from continental competition at the preliminary stage.
