A serious road accident on Tuesday left at least six people injured after a commercial Volkswagen bus overturned on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
The incident took place on the Adekunle corridor of the bridge, heading towards Iyana-Oworonsoki. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the fully loaded commercial bus, with registration number KRD 436 XF, was involved in the single-vehicle crash.

LASTMA reported that two men and four women sustained serious injuries. One passenger suffered a severe eye injury during the impact.
Agency officials on routine patrol in the area were quick to respond, launching a coordinated rescue effort at the scene. “Upon arrival, our officers swiftly extricated the trapped victims from the wreckage and ensured they received urgent medical attention,” a LASTMA statement confirmed.
Bystanders assisted by taking four of the injured individuals to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, officers from the Adekunle Division of the Nigeria Police Force transported a male victim with multiple fractures to a medical facility for more intensive treatment.

The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) provided on-site medical care to another injured passenger before they were taken for further evaluation.
To restore traffic flow and prevent further incidents, LASTMA officials quickly cleared the crashed bus from the roadway, alleviating the resulting congestion.
Hon. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, commented on the accident, extending his sympathies to the victims and their families and wishing them a swift recovery.
Giwa issued a stern warning to commercial drivers about the dangers of overloading and neglecting vehicle maintenance, highlighting that such negligence is a leading cause of road accidents in the state.

“Commercial operators must stop endangering lives through overloading and failure to conduct proper mechanical checks, particularly on braking systems, before embarking on journeys,” he stated.
He reiterated the state government’s dedication to ensuring road safety, warning that avoidable negligence and mechanical failures will continue to face strict penalties.
