VIDEO: El-Rufai accuses Tinubu of illegal N1.5 trillion deductions, calls action impeachable

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of unlawfully deducting N100 billion every month from Nigeria’s Federation Account without constitutional authorization, describing the action as an impeachable offence.

El-Rufai made the allegation during an appearance on Arise News Prime Time, where the discussion focused on whether a political coalition could defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

According to El-Rufai, the deductions, based on what he described as official government data, have continued for more than 15 months, amounting to a total of N1.5 trillion.

El-Rufai argued that the deductions violate Nigeria’s constitution because they were made without appropriation by the National Assembly.

He further noted that since the Federation Account includes funds belonging to state governments, the absence of approvals from state assemblies compounds the alleged illegality.

“For that N100 billion that goes out every month from the Federation Account without appropriation by the National Assembly and without appropriation by state assemblies, the entire deduction and expenditure is unconstitutional,” he said. “It’s an impeachable offence.”

Questioning how the funds were utilized, El-Rufai linked the alleged deductions to Nigeria’s worsening security challenges. He expressed concern that despite the massive outflow of funds, insecurity continues to escalate across the country.

“N1.5 trillion gone. What is it being used for?” he asked. “Why is the security situation just getting worse? Why is the government asking communities to protect themselves?”

El-Rufai, who was a prominent figure in the APC and played a role in President Tinubu’s 2023 election campaign, expressed deep disappointment with the administration’s performance.

“President Tinubu’s government has failed woefully,” he said. “If you asked me in 2022 or 2023 when we were campaigning that things would ever be this bad, I would say that you’re mentally ill.”
