The Voice of Nigeria (VON), on Sunday, July 27, released an official statement apologising for an inaccurate publication regarding the final outcome of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) match between Nigeria and Morocco.

Their earlier report, titled “Morocco Defeats Nigeria To Win First-Ever WAFCON Title,” was published on Saturday, July 26, and wrongly claimed that Nigeria had lost to Morocco. In reality, the Super Falcons made a remarkable comeback to beat the hosts Morocco 3–2, winning their 10th WAFCON title and earning their place as Africa’s top women’s football team.

In a statement on the VON official page, the Director General, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, admitted that the report was a mistake. “We sincerely apologise for the misinformation and the confusion it caused,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to Nigerians and others who reached out with concerns, support, and feedback after the error. He further explained that the wrong report may have been caused by an internal error or possibly a cyber-attack as investigations are still ongoing to confirm the cause.
As part of the reform to strengthen its editorial and digital security in order to avoid future mistakes, new editorial structures, such as a Fact-Checking unit, an investigative Desk, and a monitoring and evaluation team, have been introduced.
The Director General also stated that no individual staff member including the sport reporter associated with the story is being blamed for the incident. Instead, the focus is on improving systems across the organization.
VON reassured the public of its commitment to repositioning VON as a more responsive institution, and thanked everyone who engaged with them during the incident. “Your voices remind us that accountability is not a burden; it is a cornerstone of public service,” the statement said.
The organization says it remains dedicated to serving Nigerians with integrity, accuracy, and transparency as the country’s official international broadcaster while upholding the three pillars of the organization: People, Platform, and partnership.
