We are prepared – LASIEC warns Ballot Snatcher

With local government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025, the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has issued a stern warning to would-be election disruptors: any act of ballot box snatching will result in immediate by-elections in affected polling areas.

Addressing journalists during a press briefing on Thursday at the Tripple C Event Centre, Sabo Yaba, LASIEC Chairperson Justice Bola Okikiolu‑Ighile (retd.), stressed the commission’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a free, fair, transparent, and credible election across all 57 Local Government Areas and LCDAs in Lagos State.

“Zero Tolerance” for Ballot Box Snatching – LASIEC

Justice Okikiolu‑Ighile’s warning was unequivocal: “There will be by-elections if a ballot box is snatched anywhere. While we don’t pray for such to happen, we are prepared to act accordingly.”

Police Deployment: Over 30,000 Officers, Clear Security Strategy

In tandem with LASIEC’s warning, the Lagos State Police Command has unveiled a robust security strategy.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh confirmed deployment of 30,000 officers comprising the state command and reinforcements from the Inspector General of Police to secure all 13,000+ polling units across the city.

The deployment includes critical support from national agencies such as the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Civil Defence Corps, with marine patrols covering riverine areas and rapid response teams ready to intervene.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin clarified that the vehicular movement restriction window has been adjusted from the initial 3:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. notice to now run from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day, easing access for individuals with urgent health care needs or international travel plans.
