We respected Remo Stars – Mamelodi Sundowns coach explains 5–1 win over NPFL Champions

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has explained that his team’s respect for Remo Stars played a key role in their dominant 5–1 victory over the Nigerian champions in the CAF Champions League second-round first leg clash in Abeokuta.

Speaking after the game at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Cardoso revealed that Sundowns had thoroughly studied the NPFL champions and approached the encounter with great tactical preparation.

“Actually, I didn’t believe we could score five goals. We respected Remo Stars, and that’s why we were able to score the goals we scored,” Cardoso told The Lagos Voice.

“We studied Remo Stars very well, we watched six of their matches, including their game against AS FAR, to prepare for this fixture. We came with big respect, and that helped us stay focused throughout the game.”

Sundowns Dominate in Abeokuta

The South African champions controlled proceedings from kickoff, taking a 2–0 lead at halftime through Tashreeq Matthews and Peter Shalulile.

They similarly resumed the second half, adding a third goal via Miguel Reisinho in the 60th minute. Substitutes Arthur De Oliveira and Katlego Ntsabeleng added two more in the 74th and 84th minutes, respectively.

Remo Stars pulled one back through Samson Olasupo, who fired home a long-range effort in the 76th minute, a consolation in front of their home fans.

Despite the heavy defeat, Remo Stars will hope to produce a remarkable comeback in the second leg in South Africa to secure their place in the CAF Champions League group stage.
