The Inspector-General of Police has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening operational capacity and discipline, as he oversaw the passing-out of 1,068 newly trained constables in Akwa Ibom State.
The constables underwent intensive firearms and tactical training in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Government as part of efforts to tackle crime and criminality across the state. The initiative marks a significant policy shift, as it is the first time police constables are being trained and authorised to carry firearms immediately after training, rather than waiting for several years of service. The move aligns with the Federal Government’s community policing agenda aimed at improving grassroots security.
