Operations at federal universities and inter-university centers are expected to face significant disruptions as the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU has declared a nationwide strike starting at midnight on May 1, 2026.
In a letter dated April 30, 2026, directed to Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, the unions expressed that this action is in response to the Federal Government’s failure to finalize renegotiations and provide a new proposal regarding allowances. The correspondence was signed by NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim.

The unions stated, “We acknowledge receipt of your letter and appreciate the Honourable Minister of Education for withdrawing the contentious circular,” referencing a prior announcement regarding a 30 percent increase in the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance.
However, they emphasized that this withdrawal did not settle the underlying issues, asserting, “Nonetheless, the withdrawal did not address the core matters at hand. The outcome of our consultations reveals that our concerns about the slow renegotiation process remain unaddressed.”
They also pointed out the lack of any new proposals: “While we recognize the withdrawal of the letter concerning the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, no new offer has emerged to replace the previous 30 percent allowances mentioned in the withdrawn letter.”

According to the JAC, members had given the government a deadline: “Given that the agreement was not concluded by April 30, 2026, and without a new offer, the strike will commence at 12am on May 1, 2026.”
They further declared, “We hereby notify the Federal Government… that due to its failure to prevent the strike by favorably responding to our demands, all members will initiate a total and comprehensive strike action starting Friday, May 1, 2026.”
The unions warned that this strike would disrupt non-academic services in federal universities, raising concerns about further disruptions to the education sector.
