Certificates alone are insufficient — Youth Minister Olawande urges Nigerian youths to focus on practical skills

Ayodele Olawande, the Minister for Youth Development, has encouraged Nigerian youths to prioritize developing practical skills, emphasizing that earning academic certificates is no longer sufficient for success in the current job market.

While speaking at the Channels Television’s Youth Forum 2026, Olawande noted that many students pursue degrees without acquiring the essential skills required for workplace success.

“I have always stressed the importance of skill development. Relying solely on certificates may not meet the demands of the job market,” he stated.

“Many individuals attending school today do so merely to become graduates. We need to tackle the skill gap at its source.”

The minister voiced his concern regarding the substantial salary expectations among some graduates, which he attributed to poor career guidance and a lack of exposure to entrepreneurship and vocational training.

“Before the program began, I noticed some youths expressing their desired salaries after graduation, with one mentioning ₦1 million and another ₦3 million,” he remarked.

“When asked how they plan to earn such amounts and stating civil service as their means, it becomes clear why skill development is vital.”

Olawande also pointed out that limited access to education remains a significant obstacle for many young Nigerians. He praised the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) for its role in helping students continue their education.

“A key issue facing youths in Nigeria is access to education for those who truly seek it,” he remarked.

“NELFund is an initiative that has positively impacted Nigeria. No student should have to drop out due to financial constraints.”

He acknowledged the challenges many youths encounter after graduating and completing their NYSC, yet insisted that they possess the potential to contribute to national growth.

“I firmly believe that Nigerian youths are not the issue. They have the drive and the solutions if they are properly engaged,” Olawande concluded.
