Terrorists escaping northern military operations are now heading south — Security Sources

Security and intelligence officials have expressed alarm regarding the migration of terrorists from northern Nigeria into regions in the South-East and South-South, as a result of ongoing military actions in Zamfara and Sokoto states.

Several security personnel, including intelligence agents and a retired military officer, reported that many insurgents forced out by the current offensives are abandoning their bases and using extensive forest areas and waterways to move southward.

The sources noted that the fleeing militants are traveling through Niger and Kogi states before reaching Anambra, with some proceeding into Abia and Imo states, while others are reported to be heading further south and west.

“These terrorists have been relocating from Zamfara through forests and secluded paths and may have reached states like Imo and Abia. Some may even be in Ogun State,” a high-ranking security official stated.

The officials mentioned that the insurgents are taking advantage of interconnected forests, cattle trails, and river paths that span several states, allowing them to avoid security blocks and aerial monitoring.

A retired Army General referred to Kogi State as a crucial transit point for these groups, due to its strategic position and the availability of various forest routes leading into southern Nigeria.

“Kogi acts as a significant junction. From there, they can connect to paths leading to the South-East, South-West, and South-South through forests and waterways,” he explained.

Additionally, an operative from the Department of State Services claimed that some terrorist factions have operational bases in forested regions that link Kogi to parts of Ekiti, Ondo, and Edo states, creating access further into southern territories.

Security experts highlighted that dense forest areas between Anambra and Imo states, including the Owerre-Ezukala, Ogbunike, Awka, and Orlu corridors, serve as likely routes for movement due to their challenging terrain and limited access.
