LSFA Imposes Sanctions on Clubs Following Violence at Ex-Internationals Cup

The Lagos State Football Association (LSFA) has expressed deep disappointment and taken disciplinary action following disruptive incidents during the Round of 16 matches of the Bet9ja Foundation Ex-Internationals Cup on Friday, June 26, 2026.

Organizers stated that the tournament was created to unite Nigeria’s legendary ex-internationals and inspire the next generation of players in an atmosphere of friendship, discipline, and sportsmanship. However, recent events have fallen short of these standards.

Both FC Omoruyi and FC Obafemi have been disqualified from the tournament. The clubs are fined N250,000 each, payable to the LSFA within 72 hours. Both teams are banned from participating in the next two editions of the competition. The LSFA has also issued a stern warning, stating, “While football is a sport fueled by passion, violence has no place in our game.”Warning Issued Over Intimidation at Ajegunle Fixture

In a separate incident at the Navy Barracks in Ajegunle, the match between FC Udeze and FC Nieketien was also scrutinized. The organizing committee received reports of repeated calls from the sidelines urging the referee to “open the match.”

The LSFA deemed such comments unacceptable, noting that any statement intended to pressure officials or incite the crowd could escalate tensions. Consequently, FC Nieketien and its affiliates have received a strong warning. The association has made it clear that any future behavior that intimidates officials, provokes opponents, or incites spectators will lead to severe disciplinary action.

A Reminder to All Stakeholders

The LSFA reminded all participating ex-internationals that they are ambassadors for Nigerian football and are expected to be role models. “Their behavior both on and off the field should embody the values they have upheld throughout their esteemed careers,” the statement read.

The association also cautioned that the continued sponsorship from the Bet9ja Foundation is not guaranteed and depends on the discipline and positive impact of the tournament. “Any act of indiscipline, violence, or misconduct undermines the value of this competition and puts at risk the opportunities for young footballers who look to our Legends for motivation,” the LSFA warned.

Emphasizing that no individual or team is bigger than the sport, the LSFA reaffirmed its commitment to fostering excellence, respect, and fair play, and stated it will not hesitate to enforce sanctions to protect these core principles.
