Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, recently shared an uplifting story about a graduate who, after struggling to find a job, began selling akara and has since expanded his business to employ 12 people.
She emphasized the significance of supporting small enterprises and vulnerable Nigerians, recounting how the young man had begun his business in Abuja out of necessity due to his job search challenges. “I read an article about a young graduate who couldn’t find work, so he started selling akara in Abuja,” she noted.

Tinubu mentioned that her help was discreet and aimed to strengthen his efforts: “We reached out to him without revealing my name. We provided him with additional support, and he is now thriving with 12 workers.”
Using this narrative to encourage affluent Nigerians, particularly successful artists, she urged them to use their wealth to assist those in need and lessen the strain on the government. She specifically called on both international and Nigerian music stars to create charitable organizations to aid the less fortunate.

“I point to Akon, who is known for his charitable contributions, and to the likes of Burna Boy, Asake, and Davido. We hope to see you involved in foundations that support the needy,” she said.
Acknowledging the benefits of success, she stressed that luxury should not overshadow kindness. “High-end cars like a Maybach or a Rolls-Royce are great, but you should also give back. The pressures on the government are significant, and there are opportunities to help.”
She concluded by celebrating the value of small businesses: “There are sellers of peppers, vegetables, okra, melon, and of course, akara—it’s delicious, and I can personally at test to that.”
