FG files charges against kidnappers of Oyo students and teachers

The Federal Government has charged three men—Abdulrazak Umar (also known as Abu Khalifa/Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (also known as Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (also known as Abu Itisar)—in connection with the recent kidnapping of students and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The 10-count indictment presented to the Federal High Court in Abuja includes allegations of terrorism, kidnapping, concealment, incitement, and illegal mining.

The defendants, all from the Suleja Local Government Area in Niger State, are accused of conspiring with individuals identified as Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed, and Ibrahim Khabab between January and May 2026 to abduct school children and teachers in Oyo State.

They are further alleged to have facilitated the kidnappings and concealed information regarding the identities and actions of the alleged masterminds, despite being aware of the scheme, violations that contravene Sections 26(2) and 16(1) of the relevant Act.

The charges also claim that on or around June 2, 2026, the trio professed membership in Darul Salam, said to be affiliated with Jamaatu Asarul Muslima Fi Bilandis Sudan (Ansaru), which is a banned terrorist group in Nigeria, in violation of Section 25(1) of the Act.

In separate counts, Abdulrazak Umar, the first defendant, is specifically accused of training and directing terrorists and inciting others to commit acts of terrorism via a WhatsApp group called “The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace,” violating Sections 15 and 2(2)(g) of the Terrorism Act, as well as Section 18 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015.

The tenth count charges Umar with engaging in illegal gold mining at streams in the Chaza area of Suleja LGA between 2024 and 2026, contrary to Section 8(b) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act.

The suspects are scheduled to appear in court next week.
