Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step aside in anticipation of the 2027 general elections, contending that the country requires a more vigorous and capable leader to address its escalating economic and security issues.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi criticized President Tinubu’s administration for failing to deliver the leadership necessary to confront Nigeria’s urgent challenges, asserting that the president no longer has the capability to govern effectively.

Obi pointed out the stark contrast between Tinubu’s time as Governor of Lagos State and his current presidency, stating, “The Bola Tinubu who served as governor is not the same as the president we have today. He seems worn out. He should gracefully retire and go home.”
The former governor of Anambra State claimed that Nigeria is headed in the wrong direction under Tinubu’s leadership. “Right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere. We must act to demonstrate that to him. This is part of why I am advocating for his retirement. He does not have the ability to fulfill the responsibilities of the job,” Obi explained.
He urged Nigerians to concentrate less on political maneuvers and more on pressing national issues such as poverty, hunger, insecurity, and the education system.

Obi noted alarming global projections indicating that nearly 79 percent of Nigerians may fall below the poverty line, with millions more at risk of food insecurity without immediate intervention.
In response to comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who praised Tinubu’s efforts to combat insecurity, Obi acknowledged the compliment but insisted that the government’s actions remain inadequate.

“Thank you to Donald Trump for his recognition. However, we need to do significantly more than we are currently doing,” Obi said.
“I’ve heard it suggested, and now Donald Trump has echoed it, that he has done his utmost. But given the crises we face, that effort falls short. We require a greater response.”
