Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election, has refuted claims that his candidacy was contingent upon a promise to serve only one term if elected.
In a recent interview, Hamzat labeled the rumors as unfounded, asserting that no such agreement exists and that the duration of an elected leader’s term is ultimately decided by the electorate through democratic means.

“Agreement? No, there’s no agreement,” he clarified, dispelling speculation regarding a one-term pact associated with his candidacy.
Hamzat also addressed the perceived role of deputy governors, vowing that his future deputy would not be treated as a ceremonial figure but would play an active role in governance. “I’m certainly not a spare tyre, and I will not treat my deputy as such because she is not,” he explained, highlighting his own involvement in supervising key ministries and contributing significantly to the current administration under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He outlined his broad policy vision for a potential administration in 2027, emphasizing priorities such as enhancing security, developing infrastructure, improving healthcare and education, advancing transportation, and increasing access to clean water to elevate the quality of life for Lagos residents.

Hamzat noted that his campaign manifesto is the result of extensive discussions with professionals, transport unions, market leaders, and various stakeholders statewide, stating that the document, originally over 500 pages, has been streamlined to address the most pressing concerns of Lagosians.
Among his immediate goals is improving access to clean water, with a target of providing potable water to at least 60 percent of residents within the first two years by renovating and expanding water infrastructure.
On the issue of security, Hamzat committed to significant investments in technology-based surveillance and other initiatives to enhance safety for residents and businesses. “We will spend whatever money we need to spend. We’ll do whatever we need to do to ensure our state is secure,” he remarked.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of stricter enforcement of urban planning regulations, improved waste management, and increased public accountability to address flooding and support the state’s ongoing development.
Regarding succession, Hamzat dismissed any fears of potential conflicts with Governor Sanwo-Olu after their tenure, citing their long-standing collaborative history. “If we didn’t fight all these years we have been working together, why would we disagree when handing over? The responsibility is too great to manage alone,” he stated.
He also revealed that efforts for reconciliation within the party are underway following the gubernatorial primaries and urged dissatisfied members to stay committed to the APC’s collective goals.

Hamzat expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu would secure re-election in 2027, claiming that the President’s current reforms would ultimately strengthen Nigeria, even amid economic challenges.
If elected, he pledged to prioritize continuity, institutional discipline, and pragmatic policies to deliver tangible improvements to the lives of Lagos residents while building upon the accomplishments of previous administrations.
