But this time, the question is bigger than Arsenal, Manchester City or Liverpool.

The 2026/27 season promises to be one of the most unpredictable in recent years. There are new managers at several major clubs, expensive new signings, ambitious promoted sides and teams that exceeded expectations last season. With the transfer window still open until September 1, clubs are continuing to reshape their squads, while pre-season performances and the Community Shield have already offered early clues about what could lie ahead.

At the centre of the conversation are the defending champions, Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s side finally ended their 22-year wait for the Premier League title last season, finishing on 85 points, seven ahead of Manchester City. They now face the difficult task of proving that their triumph was not simply a breakthrough moment but the beginning of a period of dominance.

The early signs are encouraging. Arsenal strengthened their squad with Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis, while their new additions have already shown signs of settling quickly. Tzolis, in particular, made an immediate impact in the Community Shield with two assists.

Then came the Community Shield

Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Manchester City was not enough to decide the Premier League title, but it was certainly enough to create an early statement. City, meanwhile, are beginning life after Pep Guardiola, with Enzo Maresca taking charge of a club that has set an extraordinary standard over the past decade.

Maresca has inherited a squad still containing Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and other world-class players, but replacing Guardiola’s influence creates questions that did not exist before. The Community Shield defeat offered an early reminder that even a squad packed with talent may need time to adapt to a new manager and a new tactical approach.

For that reason, Arsenal currently have the strongest argument for the title. Opta’s pre-season projections give them a 38 per cent chance of retaining the championship, ahead of Manchester City at 20.5 per cent and Liverpool at 9.2 per cent.

But football rarely follows the script

Liverpool are entering another new chapter under Andoni Iraola, and their summer has been about rebuilding as much as strengthening. The new manager will have to establish his identity while integrating new faces into a squad that has undergone significant changes. Liverpool have the quality to challenge, but their biggest challenge could be finding consistency during a period of transition.

Chelsea could become one of the most interesting teams to watch. Xabi Alonso’s arrival brings a different tactical approach, while the club have continued their huge investment in the squad. Their enormous spending means expectations will be high, but whether the new manager can turn individual quality into a consistent title challenge remains to be seen.

Tottenham have also invested heavily as they attempt to recover from a difficult previous campaign, while Manchester United enter the season with renewed optimism under Michael Carrick. Their strong finish to last season gives them something to build on, although returning to European football will test the depth and consistency of the squad.

Yet perhaps the most fascinating stories will not come from the clubs fighting for the trophy.

Sunderland have already shown what is possible

Returning to the Premier League after eight years away, the Black Cats were widely expected to struggle. Instead, they finished seventh and secured Europa League football, turning what was supposed to be a survival campaign into one of the biggest success stories of last season.

The challenge now is different: can Sunderland do it again?

Their second season will involve the additional demands of European football, making the campaign considerably more difficult. Their ability to maintain their league position while competing across more fixtures will be one of the most intriguing stories of the season.

Leeds United are another club worth watching closely

After returning to the Premier League, Daniel Farke’s side have continued to strengthen rather than simply prepare for survival. James Trafford and Tarik Muharemović are among the additions designed to improve the spine of the team, while Harry Wilson provides further Premier League experience. Their recruitment suggests a club preparing not merely to survive, but to establish itself.

And then there is Coventry City

Frank Lampard’s side return to the Premier League after a remarkable Championship campaign. Their promotion was built on an impressive attacking record, and they have continued to show ambition ahead of their return to the top flight. The signing of Taiwo Awoniyi adds Premier League experience to a squad preparing for its first top-flight campaign in 25 years.

However, Coventry’s challenge will be enormous. History shows how difficult the transition from the Championship to the Premier League can be, with all six promoted clubs relegated immediately across the previous two seasons. Coventry, Ipswich Town and Hull City therefore face a major battle to prove that they can break the trend.

Beyond them, Bournemouth will enter their first European campaign after an impressive league finish, Brighton will return to continental football through the Conference League, while Aston Villa, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Brentford will all have reasons to believe they can push higher.

That is what makes this Premier League season so intriguing

There is no shortage of money, ambition or quality. There are established giants trying to maintain their dominance, ambitious clubs attempting to break into the European places, promoted sides trying to survive and surprise packages looking to prove that last season was no fluke.

The biggest question, however, remains at the top.

Can Arsenal defend their crown?

The statistics, squad stability and Community Shield performance suggest they can. Manchester City’s quality means they cannot be ruled out, while Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United have the resources to disrupt the established order.

But the Premier League will not be decided by the biggest clubs alone

Sunderland will attempt to prove that last season was not a fairy tale. Leeds will look to establish themselves after promotion. Coventry will discover whether their Championship dominance can translate to the highest level. Bournemouth and Brighton will attempt to balance domestic football with European ambitions, while the traditional giants will battle under the weight of enormous expectations.

Twenty teams, different ambitions and 380 matches will eventually provide the answer.

For now, Arsenal enter as favourites, but the real beauty of the Premier League is that being favourites has never been the same thing as being guaranteed to win.
