The Lagos State Government has called for stronger collaboration between the legal profession and policymakers to translate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into effective laws, policies and measurable development outcomes.
The Permanent Secretary, Office of Sustainable Development Goals, Lagos State Government, Mrs. Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, made the call at a Stakeholders’ Forum for Policymakers and the Legal Community on SDGs Implementation held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja.

Speaking on the theme, “Understanding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The Foundation, Principles and Role of the Legal Profession and Policymakers,” Sarumi said the SDGs provide a framework for governments to translate development priorities into laws, policies and programmes.
She noted that the Goals are already integrated into Lagos State’s development architecture through the Lagos State Development Plan 2052, planning and budgeting processes, sectoral policies and government programmes.
According to her, the interconnected nature of the SDGs means progress in areas such as education, employment, gender equality and strong institutions can influence outcomes across other sectors.

Sarumi urged legal professionals to contribute more actively through legislation, policy development, regulatory reforms and improved access to justice, particularly for vulnerable groups.
She also called on policymakers to ensure that policies are evidence-based, inclusive, adequately funded, legally sound and measurable.

With the 2030 SDG deadline approaching, the Permanent Secretary urged stakeholders to focus on implementation and measurable results rather than commitments alone.
“The SDGs provide the global framework, our laws provide the foundation, our policies provide the direction, our institutions provide the mechanism, and our collective action will determine the results,” she said.
She called for sustained collaboration among government institutions, the legal community and other stakeholders to advance inclusive, resilient and sustainable development in Lagos State.
