NPFL will not grow – Ideye

Ideye argues passionately that online and media focus on Europe’s elite leagues has created a culture of underappreciation for local talent.

The NPFL, he says, can’t thrive until Nigeria itself starts celebrating and investing in its own top-flight league.

On X, Ideye wrote, “The NPFL will never get better if all we talk about is EPL and LALIGA. It’s time we start promoting our own league. How many players from the NPFL that made it out and secured a deal? This will tell you the level of the league is very low.”

This stance builds on his earlier assessments, where he slammed poor player welfare highlighting rotten logistics, subpar feeding, and substandard accommodation for NPFL players.

Unpacking the Problem

1. Media Obsession with European Leagues

With Nigerian fans glued to English Premier League, Spain’s LaLiga, and Italy’s Serie A, local coverage of the NPFL is minimal. This lack of visibility means fewer sponsorships, lower gate revenue, and limited broadcast investment—creating a vicious cycle of neglect.

2. Agent-Driven Exodus to Obscure Leagues
Ideye previously condemned agents who send young talents to Iraq, Albania, and other low-profile leagues instead of nurturing their careers in Europe or the NPFL.

“It’s really sad how all these agents ship out our young stars… It’s better to start in a second division club in France, Spain or Germany…”

Such moves often sideline players into obscurity, undermining both their prospects and the NPFL’s appeal.

3. Structural & Welfare Deficits
In interviews, Ideye repeated complaints about poor transportation, low-quality accommodation, and inadequate nutrition—all contributing to the league’s substandard standards.

With decades of international experience—including stints in West Bromwich Albion, Dynamo Kyiv, Olympiacos, Malaga—the 36‑year‑old veteran brings credibility to his critique. As a returnee, his perspectives carry weight within local football circles.
