A man identified as Lekan Lasisi has been taken into custody by the Ogun State Police Command after allegedly killing his stepbrother during a heated dispute over a N4,000 debt. The fatal incident occurred in the Abule Tuntun area of Odeda Local Government Area.
The confrontation, which took place on December 19, reportedly began when Lasisi confronted his stepbrother about his habit of accumulating debts. Lasisi stated that he was frequently approached by his stepbrother’s creditors, who demanded that he settle the outstanding payments, causing him significant frustration.

According to Lasisi, the argument escalated dramatically when the deceased allegedly brandished a cutlass. In response, Lasisi claimed he retrieved a gun. He maintains that the firearm discharged accidentally, striking and killing his stepbrother.
In a video of his interrogation, Lasisi recounted the events leading to the tragedy. He explained that on the day of the incident, he was at a local bus stop when a woman informed him that his stepbrother owed her N4,000.
“When my brother came back, I challenged him on why he would be owing debt and causing us shame,” Lasisi said. “He got angry and started making trouble. He was the one who first brought out a cutlass, and I brought out a gun, but it accidentally discharged and hit him. I did not intend to kill him.”
Lasisi, who identified himself as a hunter, insisted that he never meant to harm his brother, describing his actions as a reaction to being threatened. “He is fond of drinking and exhibiting different attitudes that can cause trouble,” he added.
While admitting to firing the weapon, Lasisi has repeatedly claimed it was an accident. He expressed remorse and pleaded for leniency, citing his family’s difficult circumstances.
“I do not intend to kill him because I can’t even say how it happened. When the gunshot hit him, I rushed to him to lift him because I was worried that I had killed my own brother,” he stated. “My appeal to the government is that they should have mercy upon me. My mother is sick, and the person who could take care of her is on a sickbed.”
Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the incident and stated that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Eleweran for further investigation.
This incident is the latest in a series of fatal disputes over small sums of money. In a separate case in Delta State, a 47-year-old man allegedly killed his cousin during an argument over a N1,000 contribution refund following a family meeting.
