The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has welcomed the defection of Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing the move as a significant political development with far-reaching implications.
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, the Lagos APC said the defection represents a serious blow to the credibility of the former vice president, arguing that the decision carries more weight than public statements or political rebuttals.

According to the party, the younger Abubakar’s decision to abandon the African Democratic Congress (ADC)—the platform currently associated with his father—raises fundamental questions about trust, conviction, and leadership within Atiku Abubakar’s political camp.
“This singular act speaks louder than any political rebuttal or press conference,” the statement read, noting that the defection sends a powerful message about confidence and belief in political leadership.

The Lagos APC also pointed to Atiku Abubakar’s long history of party defections, recalling his moves from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action Congress (AC), back to the PDP, and now to the ADC. The party argued that these repeated switches have fueled public skepticism about his ideological consistency and political principles.

Describing the former vice president’s political journey as one marked by “repeated defections and an unrelenting personal ambition for the presidency,” the APC suggested that his son’s decision to chart a different course represents a generational rejection of what it termed “politics without clear conviction.”
The party further framed the defection as an endorsement of the APC’s leadership and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly his Renewed Hope Agenda. According to the statement, the move reflects growing confidence in the APC’s governance philosophy and policy direction.

While formally welcoming Abubakar Atiku Abubakar into its ranks, the Lagos APC urged Nigerians to see the development as evidence of a shifting political landscape, insisting that the era of “political tourism and ambition without ideology” is gradually coming to an end.
The party concluded by stressing that credible national leadership must first command trust and confidence at home, adding that Nigerians are increasingly applying this standard with greater scrutiny as the country’s political future evolves.
