Anioma state to be established with Asaba as its capital — Akpabio announces

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reiterated strong legislative and political support for the establishment of Anioma State, indicating renewed momentum for this long-standing initiative.

At the APC South-South zonal congress in Asaba, Akpabio emphasized that Bola Tinubu’s administration is dedicated to this project.

He outlined a proposed framework where Asaba would serve as Anioma State’s capital, while Warri would become the capital of a restructured Delta State.

Akpabio pointed out that Warri is already equipped with essential infrastructure, such as an airport, seaport, government offices, oil company facilities, and a stadium.

He characterized the demand for Anioma as historically warranted, highlighting equity, administrative efficiency, and balanced development as fundamental reasons driving the proposal.

He mentioned that the initiative, led by Ned Nwoko, is a priority for the 10th Senate and promises socio-economic and governance advantages.

“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate is fully in support of this initiative,” Akpabio stated, noting that this transition would bring development and shared prosperity.

He elaborated that dividing Delta State into two functioning entities would improve decentralization and governance.

In November 2025, Nwoko indicated that the campaign had gained significant traction, with committees on constitutional amendments involved and 97 senators reportedly backing the initiative, demonstrating unpr ecedented support.
