Aviation crackdown deepens as Ibom Air passenger faces sanctions

A typical Sunday flight from Uyo turned chaotic at Murtala Muhammed International Airport when a woman on an Ibom Air flight reportedly attacked a cabin crew member and had a confrontation with security personnel.

According to multiple eyewitnesses, the incident began mid-flight after the passenger refused repeated instructions to switch off her mobile phone. The confrontation escalated into a verbal altercation with a flight attendant, which later turned physical as passengers prepared to disembark.

Viral videos from the scene show the woman, dressed in a white top and black trousers, confronting crew members before resisting intervention from Aviation Security and police officers. The disturbance spilled onto the tarmac before she was overpowered and taken away in an airport security vehicle.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has condemned the incident, warning that disruptive behaviour on flights will not be tolerated. “Passengers need to understand they have responsibilities, not just rights,” said NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu. He confirmed that an investigation is underway and sanctions could follow.

Ibom Air confirmed the incident and disclosed that the passenger has been handed over to police authorities. The airline also announced a travel ban on her across its services.

The altercation comes just days after Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, was handed a six-month flying ban for obstructing a ValueJet aircraft from taxiing at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport part of a growing crackdown on unruly air passenger behaviour in Nigeria.

Aviation stakeholders warn that such incidents not only disrupt operations but also pose serious safety risks, urging passengers to respect crew instructions at all times.
